Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), also known as moniliasis, is a type of yeast infection affecting the vulva and vagina. Yeast is a form of fungus, which is why this condition during pregnancy is commonly referred to as a “vaginal yeast infection in pregnancy.” The yeast most often responsible is Candida albicans, although other species—such as Candida glabrata and Candida tropicalis—can also cause these infections.

Statistics show that in the United States, three out of every four women experience at least one yeast infection in their lifetime, and up to 45 percent develop two or more episodes.

During pregnancy, Candida-related infections become even more common. While about 20 percent of women naturally carry Candida yeast in the vagina, this number increases to around 30 percent during pregnancy. Due to hormonal fluctuations, the yeast can overgrow and lead to infection.

Because one of the complications of vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy is the possibility of transmitting the yeast to the baby during birth, timely treatment is very important.

Causes of Yeast Infections in Pregnant Women

The primary cause of vaginal yeast infections during pregnancy is hormonal changes, which alter the pH balance of the vagina. This creates an environment that is more favorable for yeast growth. In addition, vaginal secretions contain higher levels of sugar during pregnancy, providing a food source that allows yeast to multiply more rapidly.

In general, the causes of vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy may be due to one or more of the following factors:

  • Hormonal changes caused by pregnancy or the premenstrual phase
  • Using hormones or birth control pills
  • Taking antibiotics or steroids
  • High blood sugar levels, such as in diabetes
  • Vaginal intercourse
  • Vaginal douching
  • Presence of blood or semen

Symptoms of Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

If you’re wondering what signs and complications a vaginal yeast infection may cause during pregnancy, the symptoms can include one or more of the following:

  • Vaginal discharge that is usually white, cottage cheese–like, and may have a yeast‑ or bread‑like smell.
  • Discharge that may appear slightly green or yellow, with a curd‑like texture and a yeast/bread odor.
  • Increased vaginal discharge.
  • Redness, itching, or irritation of the vulva.
  • A burning sensation during urination or intercourse (painful urination during pregnancy can be one of the signs of a yeast infection).

A doctor can examine your symptoms and prescribe the appropriate treatment for a yeast infection. However, if you have symptoms similar to a yeast infection during pregnancy but your doctor has ruled it out, you may be experiencing one of the following:

  • A sexually transmitted disease (STD) such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis
  • A vaginal infection known as bacterial vaginosis (BV)

Diagnosis of Vaginal Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

At the doctor’s office or a medical clinic, the specialist typically uses a simple, painless swab to collect a sample of vaginal discharge and examine it under a microscope. In most cases, a routine vaginal examination is enough for the doctor to diagnose a yeast infection. In rare situations, the sample may be sent to a laboratory for culture.

Treatment of Vaginal Yeast Infection During Pregnancy

For treating vaginal yeast infections during pregnancy, doctors generally recommend only vaginal creams and suppositories. There is no scientific evidence confirming the safety of oral medications—such as the single‑dose drug Diflucan—during pregnancy or breastfeeding, which is why they are not prescribed. At the same time, not all vaginal creams and suppositories are considered safe for use during pregnancy, so it is best to consult your obstetrician or pharmacist to receive the appropriate medication.

Some people use medication on their own to treat a vaginal yeast infection during the first month of pregnancy or the first trimester. Although your doctor may prescribe certain antifungal treatments that are safe during pregnancy, you should never use them without consulting a healthcare professional.

It may take 10 to 14 days for a dermatologist or obstetrician to fully treat a vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy. After the infection clears and the irritation heals, using a non‑starch drying powder or nystatin powder may help prevent recurrence.

Over‑the‑counter medications available for treating vaginal yeast infections in the form of creams, ointments, or suppositories include:

  • Clotrimazole (Mycelex, Lotrimin AF)
  • Miconazole (Monistat 3)
  • Terconazole

These products can be used as ointments for treating vaginal yeast infections during all stages of pregnancy. They do not pose any risk of birth defects or pregnancy complications. For example, clotrimazole cream is commonly used by many pregnant women. However, you should always consult your doctor or pharmacist before using any medication.

If left untreated, yeast infections during pregnancy can lead to the yeast being passed to your baby during childbirth, causing a condition called “thrush,” which can be effectively treated with Nystatin.

Preventing Vaginal Yeast Infections During Pregnancy

Preventing Vaginal Yeast Infections During Pregnancy

Most yeast infections can usually be prevented by following these recommendations:

  • Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing and cotton underwear.
  • After regular and thorough washing (using unscented, hypoallergenic soap), use a cool blow‑dryer to completely dry the genital area.
  • Always wipe from front to back after using the restroom.
  • Shower immediately after swimming. It’s best to change out of swimsuits, workout clothes, or any damp clothing as soon as possible.
  • Avoid vaginal douching.
  • Do not use feminine hygiene sprays.
  • Avoid deodorant‑containing pads and tampons.
  • Do not bathe in bubble baths, and avoid scented soaps.
  • Avoid colored or scented toilet paper.
  • Include yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus in your diet.
  • Limit sugar intake, as sugar promotes yeast growth.
  • Get enough rest so your body can fight off infections more effectively.

Fortunately, the effect of a mother’s vaginal yeast infection on the fetus is minimal. In other words, yeast infections are not dangerous—they are mainly uncomfortable and irritating. However, if you have an active yeast infection at the time of delivery, it may be passed to your baby during birth. As mentioned earlier, the fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections during pregnancy can lead to oral thrush in newborns.

Pregnant women may develop vaginal yeast infections because of the changes happening in their bodies. However, there is no evidence that this type of infection can harm the unborn baby. If the infection is not treated by the time the baby is born, the fungus may enter the baby’s mouth during delivery and cause white patches known as thrush. This oral thrush can be transferred back to the mother during breastfeeding. Still, this condition is not dangerous for the baby and can be easily treated with simple medication. In other words, a vaginal yeast infection in early pregnancy cannot be passed to the fetus.

No. Having a yeast infection does not directly affect your chances of getting pregnant. However, it may cause symptoms that make intercourse uncomfortable, such as itching, irritation, pain, and swelling.
4
The most important point is that you should not take oral antifungal medications during pregnancy. If there is any possibility that you might be pregnant, inform your doctor so they avoid prescribing oral treatments. Various creams and vaginal suppositories are available that are considered safe for treating yeast infections during pregnancy. One of the commonly used medications is clotrimazole, which poses no risk to the fetus. However, you should always consult your doctor before starting any treatment.

Final Thoughts

Vaginal yeast infections are common, uncomfortable, and even more likely to occur during pregnancy due to natural hormonal changes. The good news is that they are not dangerous for the baby and can be treated safely and effectively with the right medical guidance. Recognizing the symptoms early, seeking proper diagnosis, and following safe treatment methods are essential steps toward a healthy pregnancy. By adopting simple preventive habits and avoiding irritants, most women can reduce their risk of recurrent infections.

If you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or experiencing symptoms that concern you, consulting a qualified healthcare professional is always the safest approach. With timely care and proper treatment, both you and your baby can remain healthy and comfortable throughout pregnancy.
